mid-gut ischaemia
Acute mesenteric vascular occlusion continues to carry an unacceptably high mortality (Mavor et al., 1962; Aakhus and Brabrand, 1967; Marston, 1971; Wittenberg, et al., 1973; Boley et al., 1973; Singh et al., 1975), this being largely because of the diagnostic problem it presents (Recek et al., 1968; Mavor et al., 1972). Clinical diagnostic pointers are well known (Marston, 1971; Mavor, 1972) b...
متن کاملFetal echogenic gut: a marker of intrauterine gut ischaemia?
The pathophysiological significance of fetal echogenic gut (FEG) is unknown. Our aim was prospectively to evaluate FEG in infants with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and absent umbilical artery end diastolic flow velocities. Over a 15 month period, nine infants with FEG met these criteria. Nine infants who, on antenatal assessment, had demonstrated IURG and absent umbilical artery end d...
متن کاملSelective angiography in acute mid-gut ischaemia.
Acute mesenteric ischaemia has a high mortality. Early diagnosis and treatment appropriate to the type and extent of vascular insufficiency are essential. Selective angiography can establish the diagnosis and distinguish patients with acute vascular occlusion who require urgent surgery from those with non-occlusive ischaemia for which early surgery is contraindicated.
متن کاملGut and vessel alterations induced by mesenteric ischaemia/reperfusion in rats.
A rat model of transient occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery was used to study the intestinal and vascular injury induced by ischaemia/ reperfusion (I/R). A pronounced intestinal injury was observed, ranging from hyperaemia to severe haemorrhagic necrosis and bleeding. The length of the damaged intestinal segments reached 58.6% of the small intestine with a decrease of the wet weight in...
متن کاملTaurine Protects Gut Barrier Function and Prevents Endothelial Cell Injury Induced by Ischaemia-Reperfusion
Purpose: Gut permeability and microvascular injury following ischaemia/reperfusion (IR) have been implicated in the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ failure (MOF). Taurine (TAU), a sulfurcontaining amino acid, is a powerful antioxidant and regulator of intracellular calcium and several studies have established that treatment with TAU protects cerebral, cardiac a...
